SNOWSHOE RACING IN MINNESOTA HAS A RICH HISTORY

Snowshoe racing has a rich history in Minnesota, dating back to the early 20th century. The state's deep connection to winter sports and outdoor activities naturally led to the development of competitive snowshoe racing.

CHESTER RIM 5K

With Duluth averaging over 85 inches of snow a year, it's no wonder it's the location of the beloved Duluth Winter Trailrunning Series which features 4 separate snowshoe running and racing events. 

The first Minnesota snowshoe race of the year, the Chester Rim 5K kicks off the Minnesota snowshoe race season with the only race in December. While most snowshoe races take place in January or February to ensure plenty of snow, December is plenty chilly in Duluth. 

Start off your snowshoe racing with this 5K that takes place on the Chester Rim Trail, a trail that runs from one end of the city of Duluth to the other.  This loop is known as being flowing, fast and fun!

NORTHWOODS WINTER TRAIL MARATHON AND HALF MARATHON

Northwoods Winter Trail Full and Half Marathon Snowshoe Race

A marathon and half marathon on snowshoes! Exactly what the hardy folks in Northern Minnesota ordered. This race takes place mostly on the summer bike trails of Lester Park, and meanders to the spectacular Hawks Ridge fat bike trail, that is perched high above the Lakeside neighborhood with incredible views of the Duluth skyline and lake Superior. 

If there was a place to try your luck at a half-marathon or full marathon on the snow, this is it! Be sure to sign up for the snowshoe race as there is also a "no shoe" trail running race on the same date. But where's the fun in that?

These races are a true test of endurance and snowshoeing proficiency, as they wind through the parks diverse terrain, featuring dense woodlands, rolling hills, and occasional steep ascents. The average temperature during this time of year in Duluth hovers around 15°F to 25°F (-9°C to -4°C), creating a crisp and invigorating atmosphere for racers.

HARTLEY PARK 10K

As it's named, this race also takes place in the Hartley Park fat bike trails in Duluth. Less intense than the half marathon and full marathon, this distance of snowshoe race is perfect for intermediate racers looking for a challenge on the snow without needing intense trading.

While not a competitive race but a community walk, the Full Moon Luminary Snowshoe Hike is certainly unique. What does luminary mean? Illuminated at night by the moon! Guided by the soft glow of lanterns lining the trail, participants will embark on a serene journey through the snow-covered landscape. FROZEN 4 HOUR

Frozen 4 Hour Snowshoe Race

Perhaps the most unique race on this list, the Frozen 4 Hour has no set distance such as 5k, 10k or half marathon. Competitors here attempt to run as many miles as possible in 4 hours on a snow-packed trail. The race will take place in Lester Park with the start/finish line at Lester-Amity Chalet. The key to this race will be understanding your perfect blend of speed vs. longevity. Four hours is a long time to snowshoe race, and at an average speed of 5 miles an hour, racers can go up to 15 miles in four hours!
