3 Types of Snowshoes

There are only three main types of snowshoes: recreational, backcountry, and racing. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at each type of snowshoe and help you decide which one is right for you.

Recreational Snowshoes

Recreational snowshoes are the most common type of snowshoe and are designed for casual snowshoeing and light trail use. They are typically the most affordable type of snowshoe and are ideal for beginners or people who only snowshoe occasionally. Recreational snowshoes have a simple, lightweight design and are easy to use. They usually have a metal frame and a plastic or nylon deck and are available in a variety of sizes.

Recreational snowshoes are best for flat or gently rolling terrain and are not designed for steep inclines or backcountry adventures. If you're looking for a simple, easy-to-use snowshoe for casual snowshoeing, a recreational snowshoe might be the right choice for you.

Backcountry Snowshoes

Backcountry snowshoes are designed for more advanced snowshoers who want to venture off the beaten path and explore the backcountry. They are larger and sturdier than recreational snowshoes, and are built to handle more challenging terrain, such as steep inclines, deep snow, and rough terrain. Backcountry snowshoes have a more aggressive design, with a metal frame and a tough deck material that can withstand the rigors of backcountry snowshoeing.

If you're an experienced snowshoer and enjoy exploring the backcountry, a backcountry snowshoe might be the right choice for you. Keep in mind, however, that backcountry snowshoes are typically more expensive than recreational snowshoes and can be heavier and more difficult to maneuver.

Racing Snowshoes

Racing snowshoes are designed for serious snowshoers who participate in snowshoe races and competitions. They are the lightest and most aerodynamic type of snowshoe, designed for speed and efficiency. Racing snowshoes have a minimalist design, with a lightweight frame and a minimal deck material. They are usually much smaller than recreational or backcountry snowshoes, which makes them easier to maneuver in deep snow and on steep inclines.

If you're a serious snowshoer and enjoy participating in races, a racing snowshoe might be the right choice for you. Keep in mind, however, that racing snowshoes are designed for speed and efficiency, and are not ideal for casual snowshoeing or backcountry adventures.
